Very. Rev. P.J Jacob Cor-Episcopo, to be consecrated as auxiliary metropolitan for Honavar Mission

Very Rev. P. J.Jacob Cor Episcopa, Plamthottathil will be consecrated as the Assistant Bishop for St. Antony’s Mission, Honnavar of the Jacobite Syrian Church under the Holy Apostolic See of Antioch and All the East by His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zalkka I, the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East on Sunday, 23rd August 2009 at the Patriarchal Monastry of St. Aphrem, Damascus (as per the Holy Bull No. E109/09 dated 20th July 2009). Catholicose His Beatitude Aboon Mor Baseliose Thomas I, Mor Gregorios Joseph (Metropolitan of Kochi Diocese & Malankara Episcopal Synod Secretary), and other metropolitans of the Syriac orthodox Church will assist His Holiness in the consecration ceremonies.


On this blessed occasion, the faithful in South Canara (Syrian, Latin, Malankara) along with all the Jacobite Syrian Christians filled with joy, express their thanks and prayers to the God Almighty for choosing and separating him as the new Bishop. Jacob Cor-Episcopa is presently serving as the Vicar of the St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Church, Athyadi, Karnataka, and also the Manager of St. Antony’s Educational Society, Honnavar. He is an obedient, sincere and dutiful priest under H. G Ghevarghese Mor Polycarpose Metropolitan of the Evangelistic Association of the East & Honnavar Mission. People believe that it is by Polycarpose Metropolitan’s wise planning with a wide-long vision and God fearing service resulted in moulding him to such an esteemed position.


Cor Episcopa is in the heart of hearts of the people for his love, simplicity and prayerful life. He is renowned for his staunch faith, respect to the Holy Throne. He is a Religious Guru, a Councellor, good leader and organizer.

Cor Episcopa is born on 12th July 1952 as the fourth son of late Mr. S/o Late K.C John and Mrs Eliyamma John., Plamthottathil House, in the small village of Kalamboor, Piravom in Ernakulam District, Kerala. His father (ancestors family) was member of St. George’s Jacobite Syrian Church, Kalamboor (Kandanad Diocese). His mother was from the Maliekal family, Pravom( sister of Maliekal Vaidyan) - were members of St. Mary’s Valiyapally Piravam ( Kandanad Diocese). His mother was the grand daughter of the sister of  late lamented Saint Paulose Mor Cooreelos (Panampady Thiumeni) and also close relatives of late lamented Dr. Thomas Mor Osthatheos, (Pachilakkattu) Metropolitan.


In 1959, his parents along with the relatives migrated to Kullanki Village in Kundapur Taluk, Udipi, Karnataka. His family took the initiative to build a new Church at Athyady along with the other seven  Jaconbite familes, which has turned up to 100 families.


ery Rev. P. J.Jacob Cor Episcopa had his primary Education from Byndoor Govt. School and Honnavar Mission School, PUC from Buttercartas College Kundapur. In the early childhood itself he was fascinated by the Holy Fathers and Saints and was keen on the religious and Church activities.


During 1975-1979 he completed his Seminary Course from the Malecruz Dayro, Puthencruz, Kerala and Syriac studies under Rev. Joseph Sir ( presantly Very. Rev. Phiehas Remban), late lamented H.G. Dr. Paulose Mor athanasius Metropolitan (Kadavil Thirumeni), H.G. Yakob Mor Themothios Metropolitan (Thrikkothamangalam) Rev. Fr. R. V Markose ( late H.G Markose Mor Cooreelose Metropolitan) and Very. Rev. Skariya Cor-Episcopa.


On 3rd February  1977 the late lamented Dr. Thomas Mor Osthatheos Metropolitan (his maternal uncle) ordained him as Korooyo at Malecruz Dayro Church and he got ordained as ‘Samsono’ (full deacon) on 23rd February 1979 by late lamented Catholicose H.B. Aboon Mor Baselios Paulose II, at Moovattupuzha Catholicate Aramana Cathedral.


On 11th May 1979, the late lamented Catholicose H.B. Aboon Mor Baselios Paulose II ordained him as Kasseesso ( priest), at St. Mary’s Jacobite Syriuan Church, Athyady. Karnataka. In the meanwhile He acquired M.A Sociology from Mysore University.


He got Ordained as Cor-Episcopo on 18th February 2003 by   H.G. Gheevargees Mor  Polycarpose  Metropolitan, at St. Mary’s Soonoro Jacobite Syriuan Church, Renjilady.


He served as the Manger of St. Antony’s Mission &  Educational Society from 1996 to 1999. He is continuing as Manger from 2002 on wards. He is also serving as manger of St. george’s PUC College, Nellyady, St. Antony’s, Udane, Jeppu St.Antony’s , Honnavar higher Elementary School, Davengere Higher Primary school and the Director of St. Antony’s Orphanage, Honnavar,Brahmavar, Melegre’s church Snehalaya Old age Home, Brahmavar Afa-Omega Retreat Centre. He was Managing Committee member of the Evangelistic association of the East for a long time.


He has three brothers – Mr. N.U. John ( father of Rev. Fr. Sunny John, Vicar, St. Antony’s Jacobite Syrian Church, Jeppu, Mangalore), P.J. Varghese, P.J Abraham and one sister Mrs. Leelamma Punnoose.


He served as Vicar in  St. Peter’s & Paul’s  J. S Church, Shirady, St. Mary’s Soonoro J.S Church Renjilady, St. Thomas J.S Church Nelliady, St. George’s J. S Church, Shibaje, St. Simmon’s J. S Church, Ichilampady, St. Mary’s J. S Church, Kunthoor, Karnataka  under the Evangelistic Association of the East and St. Antony’s J. S Church, Jeppu, Mangalore,St. Milagre’s J. S Church, Brahmavar, St. George’s Church, Madhyody, St. antony’s J. S Church, Honnavar and St. Mary’s J. S. Church, Athyady under Honnavar Mission.


Jacobite Syrian Christians congratulate Very. Rev. Jacob Cor-Episcopa and pray God Almighty to grand him wisdom and strength to lead the faithful to the next decade and keep the Church flag fly at its high mast. People of South Canara extend their sincere wishes for a new Diocese for the development of the Community and the church in general.
